Festival hair tips and tricks from Paul Edmonds

Reading? Glastonbury? Bestival? Wherever you may be heading to party on this summer, these indispensible styling and colour tips from the Paul Edmonds salon in London will ensure your hair rocks out in a similar fashion. The pictures below were taken at various festivals I’ve been to – hope you like them!

Celebrity hair stylist, Paul Edmonds, explains: “The ethereal look was a key trend on the SS15 catwalks, so braid or plait the hair, placing beading or a few flowers into the sections of the plait for a girly chic look. Practise a couple of easy braids to switch styles for Day 2 hair, ensuring it doesn’t look too perfect. Don’t forget to take bands to hold the ends.”

Dry shampoo: Try L’Oreal Tecni Art Fresh Dust as it’s got a fragrant smell and won’t make your scalp itchy. It’s also great to use just after you’ve washed your hair to hold the style for longer, adding a bit of texture. Another must-have product is Volume Maker by Shu Uemura for instant root lift, texture and body.

Cordless hot irons: If you’re taking a rucksack then pack these to add movement into hair. Take random sections and ruffle it up – L’Oreal Tecni Art Constructor will help to keep the style as well as giving heat protection. Remember, it should look like you’ve just run your fingers through your hair in the morning – very natural.

If it rains: Quickly make a ponytail, twist round until you get a rope style and place into a bun. When it dries you will have a festival style beach wave; apply some mousse and run through to break up any loose ends – you’ll end up with bouncy hair. photo 1 photo 2 photo 3

Vernon Deysel, creative colour director at Paul Edmonds, says: “Greys and metallics are a major trend this season, and given a bolder twist with drifts of iridescent multi-tonal shades of dark grey to shimmering blue greys and silver, make it look fresher and more youthful. Colour is no longer about static all over colour, but instead is an intelligent application of layered colours placed on panels, and balayage pieces to add further depth and dimension.”

Metallic hair colour: Spray on metallic hair colour and incorporate metallic copper, silver and gold foils using the Tecni Art range and Shu Uemura Liquid Fabric.

Gemma Humes, afro stylist at Paul Edmonds, recommends: “Individuals with chemically relaxed hair should consider using coloured clip extensions, weave or a full-on hair piece as afro hair tends to be fragile and using colour over relaxed hair can be damaging.”

Chalk hair: It’s all about chalk and an ideal way to add a bit of boho to your overall appearance is by using soft feathers, colours and chalks. Chalk comes in varying base colours of green, blue, red, pink, purple, browns, bronze and black. These can be painted in sections, giving pastel highlights, and look great on brunettes and blondes.
